In July 2016, the new changes to the SOLAS legislation come into force and with both Ireland and the UK being states of International Marine Organisation it will affect all ports and terminals on the island.
The new SOLAS verification rules state that all containers weights have to be verified before loading onto the vessel and there are two methods that the weights can be verified. Either by weighing the container after it has been packed or weighing all of the goods and packaging material before they are packed and adding this weight to the weight of the containers.
It’s anticipated that the increase in weighing before loading will slow down the throughput of ports so upgrading existing weighbridge systems and software will be essential to comply but also keep current efficiencies. Weighing the containers once packed is by far the easiest and most accurate method and can be achieved with an upgrade to current weighbridge systems.
